Clinical translational study of suprachoroidal indentation balloon and implantation device in macular area of high myopia

High myopic maculopathies have become one of the main causes of blindness in adults at present. Current surgical procedures include vitrectomy and posterior scleral reinforcement, however, they both had limitations and problems,such as severe surgical complications, limited source of materials and ethical issues. Therefore, our team innovatively invented a suprachoroidal indentation balloon and its implantation device, with the purpose of shortening the eyeball and treating maculopathy by pressing the suprachoroid space of macular region in high myopia. At present, the relevant patents have been applied, and sample diagram of the device has been completed. In the preliminary animal experiments, local retinal indentation was achieved by injecting a pressurized sponge and viscoelastic into the suprachoroidal space. This project intends to complete the prototype of the novel suprachoroidal indentation balloon and its implantation device, to demonstrate its effectiveness (shortening of axial length ) and safety (postoperative inflammation) in bred rabbits,so as to provide a solid research foundation for clinical validation in the future.
